The Oncotype DX test is a genomic test used to assess the risk of recurrence in early-stage, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. It helps doctors determine whether chemotherapy is necessary in addition to hormone therapy.
How it works:
A small sample of breast tumor tissue is collected.
The tissue is analyzed for the activity of 21 genes related to cancer recurrence.
The test generates a Recurrence Score between 0 and 100.
Interpretation of Results:
Low recurrence score (0-15): Indicates a low risk of recurrence and chemotherapy is unlikely to be beneficial.
Intermediate recurrence score (16-25): Indicates a moderate risk of recurrence. Chemotherapy may be considered, but the decision depends on other factors.
High recurrence score (26-100): Indicates a high risk of recurrence and chemotherapy is likely to be beneficial.
Benefits:
Helps personalize treatment decisions based on individual risk.
Reduces unnecessary chemotherapy in patients with low risk of recurrence.
Provides reassurance to patients with high risk who may benefit from chemotherapy.
Limitations:
Not suitable for all patients with breast cancer, such as those with HER2-positive or triple-negative breast cancer.
The test is not a guarantee of treatment outcome.
The results should be interpreted in conjunction with other patient factors, such as age, overall health, and preferences.
(I am currently awaiting my octotype score. I had a lumpectomy to remove a cancerous mass on October 1, 2025.)
